On 12/14/04, had cataract surgery on left eye (went from -7.0 to
-1.50). Right eye has beginnings of a cataract - not yet affecting
vision. I have been wearing a contact lens in the other eye (also at
-7.0). Now, my right eye seems to be rejecting the lens - eye is
irritated and the lens is very uncomfortable - after 2 months of very
comfortable wearing. The lens is a Biomedics 55 - the 2 week disposable
kind. I've even tried a new lens, and it still hurts. Anybody have any
similar dealings with this type of lens or this type of problem?

Saying that your eye "hurts" isn't very descriptive.

The standard questions would be: When does it start? Is it an itching
sensation, a foreign object sensation, or a burning sensation? Does it
go away immediately when the lens is removed? Is there discharge? If
so, what kind? Is the vision affected? Does the lens move around?

To be more specific, the eye is red and irritated. Vision is not
affected at all. I've been wearing the lens for 12-14 hours a day.
(perhaps too long?) And, yes, I get relief when the contact lens is
removed. I do seem to have enough tear production - and the fit seems
adequate. But I'm wondering if there's not enough oxygen getting to the
eye. Are daily disposables less irritating to the eye? Of course, I
need to be able to wear a lens in my non-operated eye - so I'm a bit
concerned.

There are many reasons why the eye might be irritated, the reason may or
may not be contact lens related. Get thee to thy contact lens fitter ASAP
to look at the eye and determine if the contact is the culprit and for
treatment/ referral if it is not.
