I'm trying new contacts made of galyfilcon A. (AcuVue Advance )
Is this a new type of plastic?

The ones I've had for years are Vilficon (Focus)
The Focus are very floppy and the AcuVue's retain their shape.

Why is there this difference.... water content? If so what is the
water content of the AcuVue's?

Is water content the majority of the reason soft contacts remain
comfortable throughout the day.
The eyedoctor claims that the AcuVues have a better chance of
staying comfortable later in the day.

The Acuvue Advance is Johnson and Johnson's way of expanding their
product line. Supposedly this lens is more wettable than most, the
lens is very similar to the Ciba Focus Night and Day

Itr is not the water content that makes this "more wettable" it is the
material.

Are you having success with it?

I'd like to give a several days before I consider it a success.
I had Focus 1 -2 Week lens (not sure if the same as
Focus Night and Day)
I have used the Focus for several years but have noticed some
blurring late at night.... due to dryness I guess.
The AcuVues seem to have more stable vision than the Focus
but I have to give it at least a week. Same RX.

Not really THAT similar.

DK (oxygen transmissability) Advance: 60-70 Night&Day: 142-175
(depends on test criteria)

Water content: 47% vs 39%

Optics: spherical vs. low e aspherical

Diameter and base curve: dissimilar in cornea draping, Advance more
elastic than N&D

Surface: hydrophillic through polymerization vs. hydrophillic by surface
treatment

Wear schedule: daily wear only, vs extended or overnight up to 30 days.

"More wettable than most". A subjective determination, but based on
patients with nominally dry eyes, Advance appears to be more wettable
than some plastics, similar to a few and similar to N&D when compared
on-eye, lens in good condition.

I fit both and they both are appropriate when fitted as required, as can
be said for a variety of other lenses.

It has been the experience of the majority of the patients that I have
fit with them, that the Acuvue Advance is significantly more
comfortable (both for patients who are considered "dry eye" and those
who are not) at the end of day than any other contact lens that I have
prescribed over the last 20 years. I am particularly unimpressed with
the comfort of Ciba's N&D. JMO,YMMV, Jay

I am beginning to agreee with your observations. They feel good
through the end of the day and don't blur out (due to drying out I guess)
at 11 PM.
