Contact lenses and near vision

Hi! I have been using glasses since 15 years ago, but last week I
visited my optometrist to start using contact lenses. I have tried a
pair of Ciba Vision Focus Dailies and a pair of Biomedics 55, and with
both of them I'm having small problems with my near vision. It's a bit
blurry, specially when looking at my LCD monitor... it fluctuates
between relatively clear and very blurry (most of the time it's
moderately blurry). On the other hand, my far vision is perfect (with
both brands).

I don't have this problem with my glasses, my near vision is crystal
clear... it isn't a dryness problem either as I blink a lot when I'm in
front of my monitor and I can't see it properly even when I look at it
for the first time.

I have a -4.0D/-3.5D prescription and I'm 23 years old (so I'm not
presbyope). Any idea about this problem? Could it be a fitting problem?
But both lenses are really comfortable...

I just forgot to mention a bizarre (but interesting) detail. If I wear
my contacts and my glasses at the same time (yes, I know that it's
really stupid) my vision becomes more "stable" and I have less problems
reading my computer monitor, although my vision is still blurry due to
that overcorrection (glasses+cl). Can this be a glasses accomodation
problem?

With out knowing that much about you or your history, it sounds like a
fitting or Rx problems. Glasses and contacts have different
perscriptions, and so some tweaking may be needed.
I'd just ask your OD about it, maybe allow you to see how the near is
by sitting near a computer in the Dr's office, instead of sending you
away to have you return later.
Just a thought.

Yes, my glasses prescription is different to my CL prescription. It
doesn't look like a Rx problem... it could be the fitting.

I have to see my OD next week, I'll talk her about the problem... but I
am curious right now and I would like to know if someone had the same
problem.

Hi, good point... I'll talk my optometrist about it. I think that my
near vision have improved a bit in the last days, so do you think that
this convergence insufficiency can disappear so fast?

On the other hand, my blurry near vision is also sensible to the light
level in my room. I'm thinking that it could be a pupil size related
problem too.

After thinking it a while, I don't think that this is related to
convergence insufficiency. I can look at my monitor 15 or 20 cm away
and my vision is perfect. The problem appears when I'm 50 or 60 cm
away, but I'm not undercorrected, my far vision is really excellent...

It's a simple law of physics that increased light levels tend to decrease
blur due to inability to focus at a given distance. That's why your
parents kept yelling at you to turn on the lights! Not because *you*
couldn't necessarily see, but because *they* couldn't see, and watching
you made them uncomfortable!

OK, I think you are right... my vision is better with high light
levels, but it's still really "unstable". This is becoming really
weird. My far vision is excellent, my very near vision is very clear
too... but my near/medium distances vision is blurry and fluctuating :S
