It looks like my optometrist is getting desperate. He perscribed me the
Versaflex MRP 55 FW lens -4.5 8.7 14.2. When I went to buy these online I
couldn't find them anywhere. I called one online shop and they suggested
they they were a private label only available to optometrists. Nice. Is this
the new tactic to avoid people getting a good deal on their contact lenses?

Does anyone know if this monthly Versflex MRP 55 is only available to
optometrists?

If so should I raise a stink with this optometrist? I've been going there 10
years.

It is the policy of Ocular Science not to sell there lenses by internet ,
they wanted there lenses sold by professionals in eyecare so problems can
easily be solved.
Cooper Vision is trying to buy OS, has far as I know the matter is not
settled yet.

I looked at the following website:

http://www.1800contacts.com/product....1528&cv=000360

If you can believe an internet contact lens seller, they claim that it is
the policy of Ocular Science to *tell* ODs that they don't sell on the
internet, and then turn around and do it anyway. And the site confirms
that Versaflex MRP is the same as Biomedics 55.

As Mike stated, this is the private label of the biomedics 55.
Nothing wrong or "crooked" (as you stated in your header) with
a provider prescribing these lenses.

It is one big game Dan.
The internet sellers can't order directly from OS and that's irritating
them.
They order with the help others, which are traced by OS and thrown out by
again OS.
They (OS) simple shut down the delivery.

BTW, in my country it is possible to order contactlenses by internet without
a prescription, one reason to support this excellent maneuver of OS.

This lens is a private labeled lens, its generic name is BIOMEDICS 55,
manufactured by Ocular Sciences

Dr. Ted

Thanks for the reply, however I don't believe it is the BIOMEDICS 55. My
perscription is for a BC of 8.7. The BIOMEDICS 55, a biweekly lense, only
comes in 8.6 and 8.8.

The VersaFlex MRP is the private label of the Proactive 55. This
comes in 8.7 BC, 14.2 Dia. and is monthly replacement. When our
office staff orders these lenses, they come labelled Versaflex when
shipped to our office and Proactive when direct shipped (at least some
of the time).

I prescribe it quite a bit, I have my best luck on young patients who
haven't worn lenses before, but always write my scripts for the
Proactive (or Biomedics instead of the other Versaflex lenses). Most
patients like them, some patients love them and others don't like them
very much -- just like every other contact lens.

I wouldn't assume that online is always cheaper; you can do better
than 1800contacts on this (and many other lenses). Rather than raise
a stink, ask the doc for a script using the "name" brand.
