The parents of a late-stage ROP patient of 11 months from the former
Yugoslavia sent me the following images of their son's eyes hoping for
some opinions from doctors other than the ones they've seen:

What do you think about this child's chances of developing any kind of
eyesight?
What sort of treatment is indicated, if any?
The patient's history is as follows:
- Born prematurely at 31 weeks and 4 days, birth weight 1650g (3lb
10oz)
- Underwent oxygen therapy for 7 days, released from the hospital at
4.5 weeks, weighing 2200g (4lb 13oz)
- Eyes examined for the first time at 8.5 weeks - diagnosis: ROP Stage
2 on right eye, Stage 3 on left; subsequent exam at 9 weeks found ROP
Stage 4a on right eye and 4b on left
- Retinal photocoagulation performed at 9 weeks on right eye, and
attempted on left eye but retina was too detached
- Vitrectomy performed on left eye at 11.5 weeks in Russia, vitreous
replaced with silicone oil; at 12 weeks vitrectomy performed on right
eye, gas bubble introduced
- Second visit to Russia at 10 months of age - cataract found on left
eye, lens removed. Diagnosis: ROP Stage 5a on both eyes. No further
surgery performed. Original silicone oil to be replaced in two years'
time.
Many thanks for your help with this!
