Extended Wear Contact Lenses

I was using Acuvue 2 for about a year, but I grew really excited when
I heard about Ciba's Night & Day lenses. I just enjoyed having the
OPTION to sleep in my contacts, if necessary.

The N&D lenses were never quite as comfortable as my Acuvues...I felt
that I could see clearer, but I was very aware of my lenses being in.
Things would also get foggy pretty regularly, and for the first time,
I needed to carry eye-drops with me everywhere. On top of it all,
these lenses are not easy to take out or put in. I am unhappy or
uncomfortable in these lenses about 60% of the time.

I'll probably go back to Acuvue 2, but I really have gotten hooked on
the idea of extended wear lenses, especially when I travel or go
camping.

It seems like there aren't a plethora of options for extended wear
lenses. (Patent disputes?) Does anybody know the future of extended
wear lenses? I've been hoping that J&J might come out with some
extended wear lenses since I was so happy with Acuvues. Any info,
suggestions?

Not so much a need as a desire.

I wear RGP lenses under Focus Night and Day lenses. Are there plano
soft lenses out there that are just for daily use? The Focus lenses
don't last more than a week or two because they're so hard to see. I
lose them when tring to put them in. Also the lack of color tint
makes them even more difficult to see. I wear the combination 4-6
hours per day.

I don't know, CHip. I'll have to research that one. I'm liking the Acuvue
Advance at the moment, and it has a blue visi-tint.

Not sure what you mean by extended. Acuvue 2 can be worn for a week without
taking them out for a cleaning. They can then be worn for another week
before disposing them.

The blue tint makes a huge difference.

I'm definitely over the whole Night & Day lenses and I'm ready to move
on. The fact that they're very difficult to take in and out was the
deal breaker for me.

I guess I've had a different experience with Focus Night & Day. I've
used various other lenses (Acuvue 1 and 2, Biomedics 55, RGPs), and
find Focus N&D to be the *easiest* lenses to handle and insert, due to
their stiffness. I don't find them any more or less difficult to
remove than other lenses, once you get the technique down. As for the
handling tint, yes, they are definitely more difficult to see when
they are sitting in the case in solution, but you get used to it. It
only takes me one or two tries to get them out of the case just by
feeling for them.

Even if these were the most difficult to handle, hardest-to-see lenses
ever made, I would still use them, because the extremely high oxygen
permeability far outweighs any handling inconveniences.

I agree with Lothar in that the Focus N&D seem easier to handle. But, for
some reason, the Advance are more comfortable for me. I have had cases
where patients preferred the N&D over the Advance.

I have horribly dry eyes and having tried both the Advance and the Focus
N&D I prefer the Focus (taking them out at night). As with most things,
YMMV. Any news on a Toric N&D?

Thanks

Focus N&D has a lower water content than Acuvue Advance, and should
therefore exhibit less in-eye dehydration than the Advance.

I don't stay up with Ciba, but one of the doctors in the NG reported that a
toric version would be out within the near future. I do know that the next
phase was to roll-out a toric version of N&D.
