Some time ago, Neil Brooks <(E-Mail Removed)> informed me of the
dangers hidden in many eye drops; preservatives such as BAK.
About two months ago, I had a trabeculectomy on my right eye because
pressure was uncontrolled by drops. It was performed by Dr. Simon Law at
UCLA. As far as I can tell, the results are excellent. Unfortunately
there seems to be significant optic nerve damage.
Previously I had complained about excessive tearing. After the surgery,
tearing in the operated eye has become much less. Since then, the
irritation in my left eye increased to the point that using drops was
very painful. I went to my original ophthalmologist who agreed that the
problem arose from preservative.
As a consequence, Dr. Law performed a trabeculectomy on my left eye
today. He immediately noticed that the eye was red and in distress. This
time, the surgery was much more painful and lasted much longer.
Subjectively, it was an order of magnitude greater and lasted longer
than during the previous surgery. He said that he tried flushing the eye
with more anesthetic but that the tears kept washing it away. At this
time, the eye is still tender although much less annoying than it was
just with the drops alone before surgery. I expect great improvement
over the next few days.
At every opportunity now, I will shout out the dirty secret ab about
preservatives like BAK.
