I have a relative considering using lasik to get rid of an
astigmatism, and wanted to ask if it would be an appropriate procedure
for him.

He's 62, healthy, and had a cataract iol in the eye about 5 years ago.

The sight for that eye is now -0.75 -1.25 170.

Will lasik work? He only wants to get rid of the astigmatism. Is it
risky?

What should something like this cost?

Dear Rich,

What should something like this cost?

The average cost for Lask is about $ 4,000

Lasik may work, however your relative would be exposed to all the
risks of Lasik (albeit relatively small), but would reap limited
benefits. If your relative is insistent of vision correction surgery,
have him investigate a surface ablation like PRK or LASEK.

It seems that something like Orthokeratology or the overnight version
would be a reasonable alternative.
