locating a good surgeon

Greetings from the land of haze...

I feel a bit dumb asking this. If you're in a city and you know there
are good cataract surgeons here, but you don't know which ones they
are, is there a good way to find out?

Or to find how good or bad a particular one is?

Doctors are very reluctant to comment on other doctors, even to
recommend the good ones. Their patients are not reluctant, but of
course I know very few patients of any given doctor.

I can form my own impressions by visiting each one, but that is
confusing and expensive.

When I was looking for a lawyer, I found the referrals given by the
American Bar Association to be worthless, so I doubt there is a
professional association I can ask this question to and get a good
answer.

Who do you ask?

thanks,
L.

One possibility: contact the IOL manufacturers. Find out if there's a
surgeon that THEY use for THEIR trials.

They have a HUGE vested interest in successful outcomes, and are
pretty likely to go with highly competent folks.

Where are you? Are you willing to travel for this procedure?

I know a few good refractive surgeons in Southern California (if you
can see through the smoke) that I would unhesitatingly recommend....

I've heard that asking the nurses in the appropriate department of the local
hospital works; the doctors are a closed union, but the nurses know what's what.

I think doctors just recommend their golf/tennis buddies. One recommended
somebody she'd met at a social engagement the previous evening.

Here's two excellent eye surgeons:
1. Lief M. Hertzog MD http://www.hertzogeyecare.com/about_us.htm (my
own ophthalmologist)
2. David A. Wallace MD FAAO http://www.la-sight.com/meet_dr_wallace.aspx
(his colleague whom I've consulted recently on whether I could have a
certain refractive surgery)

Several major ophthalmic device companies use Dr Wallace for
consulting and teaching. He has invented devices used in eye surgery.
He is a member of the American Society for Cataract and Refractive
Surgery. And Dr Hertzog instructs at USC in eye surgery
