The REALLY curious thing here is .. marijuana increases acetylcholine
in the body.
Marijuana is use to treat glaucoma.
Drugs which raise acetylcholine are used to treat glaucoma.
IS it the lack of acetylcholine / lecithin .. ?
One might wonder if there 'just so happens' / coincidentally are any
crossovers in the drugs used for glaucoma and MS .. ?

Review Finds Marijuana May Help MS Patients
By Steven Reinberg
HealthDay Reporter
FRIDAY, Dec. 4 (HealthDay News) -- Cancer patients, glaucoma patients
and others can benefit from medical marijuana, and now a new analysis
shows that it can help multiple sclerosis (MS) patients find relief
from the muscle spasms that are the hallmark of the debilitating
autoimmune disease.

Section 7-C-5: Cholinergic Agents

http://www.medrounds.org/glaucoma-gu...ic-agents.html

The cholinergic agonists act at a receptor called the muscarinic
receptor.
Agents within this class can act directly at the receptor or
indirectly
by inhibiting the breakdown of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine by
the
enzyme acetylcholinersterase.
The topical medications within this class include pilocarpine,
echothiophate
iodide, and carbachol.
With the number of better tolerated and more easily administered
glaucoma
drops on the market, these agents are no longer as popular in 2006.

Direct-Acting Cholinergic - Pilocarpine

Pilocarpine is a direct-acting cholinergic agonist.
It opens the drainage angle and increases the trabecular
meshwork aqueous outflow.
There are different percentages of pilocarpine, and it has
been noted that darker eye colors may require higher dosages
of the medication.
Dosing is frequently four times daily which can be difficult
for a patient to comply. Pilocarpine was used frequently in
the past due to its efficacy with rare systemic side effects
(Table 7-7).

"Cannabinoids increase ACh and decrease ACh turnover ."

Effects of cannabinoids on levels of acetylcholine and choline and on
turnover rate of acetylcholine in various regions of the mouse brain.
Tripathi HL, Vocci FJ, Brase DA, Dewey WL
[Journal Article, Research Support, U.S. Gov't, P.H.S. ]
Alcohol Drug Res 1987; 7(5-6):525-32.

The psychoactive cannabinoids, delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta 9-
THC), delta 8-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta 8-THC), 11-hydroxy-delta 9-
tetrahydrocannabinol (11-OH-delta 9-THC) and 9-nor-9 beta-
hydroxyhexahydrocannabinol (beta-HHC), as well as the nonpsychoactive
cannabinoids, cannabinol (CBN), cannabidiol (CBD), abnormal CBD,
delta
8-THC methyl ether (1-OCH3-delta 8-THC) and 9-nor-9 alpha-
hydroxyhexahydrocannabinol (alpha-HHC), were used to assess the role
of cholinergic mechanisms in the different behavioral actions of
these
cannabinoids. Their effects on mouse brain choline and acetylcholine
(ACh) levels and on ACh turnover were determined in cortex,
hippocampus, striatum, midbrain and medulla-pons. delta 9-THC (30 mg/
kg) caused a significant elevation of ACh in all five brain areas.
11-OH-delta 9-THC (30 mg/kg) increased ACh in hippocampus, striatum
and midbrain. delta 8-THC (30 mg/kg) increased ACh in cortex and
hippocampus.
delta 9-THC and 11-OH-delta 9-THC increased choline in midbrain and
cortex, whereas beta-HHC increased choline in all areas, except
hippocampus, at a dose of 30 mg/kg.
Also at this dose, delta 9-THC, 11-OH-delta 9-THC, delta 8-THC and
beta-HHC decreased ACh turnover in the hippocampus, as did CBN (10-30
mg/kg), 1-OCH3-delta 8-THC (100 mg/kg) and alpha-HHC (100 mg/kg).
ACh turnover was also decreased in midbrain by 1-OCH3-delta 8-THC and
in the striatum by alpha-HHC.
Thus, the most consistent effects of cannabinoids, both
psychotomimetic and nonpsychotomimetic, were to increase ACh and
decrease ACh turnover in the hippocampus.
