Occasional Pain and Tearing Up in One Eye

Every once in a while I wake up in the morning and have a horrible
intermittent pain in my left eye and my nose is running like crazy.
It is always my left eye. It has a feeling like it has been scratched
really bad and then every few minutes or so the pain comes in a wave
and the nose starts to run. It usually goes away by noon when it
happens. Any thoughts? It is my "bad" eye....I have 20/20 in my
right but my left is blurry. I wear glasses for reading etc. Again,
this only happens a few times a year but today it is particularly
painful.

BINGO! I have been told this by my wife...(inherited this from my
dad)...is this considered dry eye possibly? I bought a lubricant eye
drop today and it helped a lot, although it still feels dry. The
horrible waves of pain have gone away

No. It's called "lagophthalmos" and it's a CAUSE of dry eye (which,
in turn, can be a cause of corneal erosions):

You may want to look at taping it shut while you sleep AND using a
preservative-free lubricant ointment at bedtime.

It is certainly very UNLIKELY, cluster headaches.

Clusters don't happen "Every once in a while I wake up in the morning"
They would tend to happen EVERY day at the same time(s)
Clusters don't last from early morning until noon. They come in
groups....hence the name "cluster", but not as "every few minutes or
so the pain comes in a wave"
The pain lasts from 45 minutes to 3 hours. (on the rare occasion of
one lasting 3 hours, the person is either in the ER by then, or on the
phone with a suicide hotline. ;-(

Being awakened, a teary eye, runny nose, terrible pain...all symptoms
of clusters, yes. The rest doesn't add up to clusters
though....thankfully, for the original author.

I agree with MT. Sounds like classic recurrent corneal erosion. Your
eyes get drier at night and the lids can actually adhere to the
surface epithelium pulling some off when you first wake up and start
blinking.

Treat with lubricants, lubricants, lubricants. At night use a gel.

bandage contact lenses (like focus n&d) can help if it is corneal
erosion, ask your eye doctor if this might be appropriate.
