Progressive or bi-focal glasses with very poor vision

Wondering !!!!!! I have very poor vision with contacts great vision. I
wear my glasses and contacts 50/50. My old pair of glasses are just
regular and latley I need to double up on the glasses to read a
book. I have no problem with the computer, I think it's because the
computer screen has light. I am getting my first pair of progressive
glasses, and I am not sure what to get/ should I get progressive or bi-
focal, my vision is...... Trying to read my prescription..... sorry!!!

- 9.75 +150 135 20/28
- 8.50 + 150 /20
ADD +225

I am 47 with an active life....4 kids. I was thinking of Varilux
1.67 Panamic, Ellipse or Physio and not sure which would be best
with less distortion for my vision or can you recommend another.

I have had progressives in 1.67 in both Panamic and Physio 360--and I
prefer the Physio---my current glasses. Frame shape and size makes a
difference---the "short" frames that are so popular sometimes don't
turn out all that well in a progressive (if the vertical dimension
isn't tall enough there's not much room for the +add).

Not sure what you mean by "doubling up" on your glasses....

I will wear my normal glasses then I put on my reading glasses on the
tip of my nose. My kids laugh at me when I do this!!!

Your computer viewing distance is probably further away than your reading
distance (if you are like most people), which is why you need more power for
reading.

If you are considering the Varilux Physio 360, you might consider the Nikon
Eyes Accolade Freedom at Wal-Mart optical. The NikonEyes Accolade Freedom is
actually made by Essilor and is basically the same as the Varilux Physio 360
(Essilor owns Varilux). Essilor sells the Varilux brand to independent
opticals, and the Essilor brands to the big box retailers, even when they
are the same product. They do this because the independents do not want to
sell the same brands as the big box stores (which usually sell them for less
money).

The price of the NikonEyes 1.67 lenses at Wlamart is about $390 (plus
frames). If you purchase frames elsewhere, I think they charge about $10
extra.

The fitting of a progressive is very important. Try and have your
frames/lenses fit by the head optician in the store (this applies to any
store you purchase lenses at).

One word of warning. With progressives, the reading area at the bottom of
the lens is less than 1/5 the width of the lens, and the intermediate area
is also very narrow. It will take time to adapt to progressives. You may be
more comfortable with a lined bifocal. Make sure that the retailer offers at
least a 30 day exchange policy if you get progressives and decide that you
want bifocals instead.

Other warnings: Do not let anyone talk you into polycarb lens material
(known as featherweight at LensCrafters). LensCrafters does have a 30 day
money back guarantee (not just exchange) but their products are mostly
inferior, so don't waste your time. Besides Walmart, Costco and Sams usually
have a pretty good 1.67 high quality progressive lens.

My father taught me this trick. You wear two pairs of glasses at the
same time. Works fine for emergency use.
