Not so. I just ordered, and received a couple of cases of the stuff.
And they're on the shelf at Longs Drugs.

But you are still introducing potential pathogens into the container.
Good idea in theory, though. Sadly, the really small dropper-size
containers of saline, if, when and where you can find them, are
outrageously priced, sometimes 30 or 40 times the per unit cost of the
larger containers.

Still possible. Sometimes, plain saline indeed works best.
Plain saline is a fine idea for rinsing/rewetting lenses in the eye. But
if you need some lubrication, or longer lasting rehydrating, then the
products designed for that are better.
I'd like to add to my "favorite drops" list Ciba's new (to the USA)
Aquify, Viva Drops and Theratears. But, as I said, they all perform
somewhat differently with different plastics on different eyes.
