There has been some controversy regarding whether ophthalmologists
should start glaucoma drops in one eye or two to see if they are
working. Classically, it was taught that drops should be started in
just one eye, and the change in the untreated eye during the trial
could be used as a control. This teaching has recently been
questioned, and there has been a lack of agreement about whether to
start drops in one eye or both. A new study shows that the
information content is the same regardless of whether a monocular
(uniocular) or binocular trial is performed. However, if a monocular
trial is performed, the untreated eye intraocular pressure change
should simply be ignored--in contrast to the classic teaching.
