Should you wear contact to an eye exam?

My girlfriend just went to have hers eyes examined at a new optomitrist
(sp).
However, she was told that she was supposed to take her contacts out 24
ours before coming for the exam. Now she's been wearing contacts for a
while and has never come across this before.
She didn't ask why this was (she was a little anoyed at not being
informed).

Why would one need to remove their contacts 24 hours before getting an
eye exam?

It's really doctor preference and what type of exam (ie. getting refit
with cl's versus only getting a spectacle prescription)a patient is
getting. Myself, I prefer the patient coming in with their contacts
on so I can evaluate the fit of the cl's and such. But I've seen
other docs prefer patients coming in without their cl's.

For me, it depends on whether or not the patient intends to get new
glasses prescribed. If they do, I like the CLs off at least for the day
of the exam (so at least 8 hours, 24 seems excessive to me). If they
are just renewing CL Rx, I prefer them to be wearing lenses if the
lenses are in relatively good shape. I don't much care to examine
through old grungy lenses.
