Why are some things considered "bad for the eyes" without proof thatthey are?

Reading lying down
Reading in moving vehicles
Reading in dim light
Reading fine print
Reading close to the eyes
Bright lights
Artificial lights
Sudden fluctuations of light
the list goes on.
