advanced Glaucoma and Macular Degeneration -- any (new) therapies ?

Discussion in 'Optometry Archives' started by Gordon Slishman, Oct 11, 2004.

  1. An elderly German relative has suddenly lost his ability to read,
and his ability to discern shadows is also in jeopardy.
The diagnosis is approximately Macular Degeneration with Glaucoma
("eine degenerative Erkrankung der Netzhautmitte und zusätzlich
eine Augenerkrankung, die mit erhöhtem Augeninnendruck und
Gesichtfelddefekten einhergeht") In California, where I live,
would the treatment be only eyedrops for the Glaucoma with a
prognosis of no improvement? (Differences in prevention do exist.
    In the USA, one obtains Preservision tabs widely over the counter;
in Germany, I cannot find the like, because of the zinc content
speculated one pharmacist.) Perhaps differences in treatment
exist as they do for prevention? Obviously we are grasping at
straws and will be grateful for any advice.

    Thanks, Gordon

There are a variety of types of glaucoma with a variety of treatments, but
the most common type is most commonly treated with drops. The drops are to
prevent further vision loss and do not normally reverse the damage already
    done.

Here is a link to glaucoma information:

    (Differences in prevention do exist.
With sudden onset of inability to read, your relative may have wet macular
degeneration or advanced dry degeneration. In both those cases, the tabs
may be of limited value. In any case, the tabs are to slow the progression
of disease, not to reverse or treat it. If you can't find Preservision,
Ocuvite, I-Caps or Vitalux (all similar supplements for ARMD) you could use
beta carotene, Vitamin C, Vitamin E and zinc supplements in similar doses.
Dark green leafy vegetables are good sources of all the ingredients in AMD
supplements. Your relative should not take beta carotene if a smoker and
should discuss the safety of zinc with a doctor before taking it.

Search on Google for a German AMD support group or German foundation for
blindness, here is a link for a US AMD information site, check out
    treatment/prevention info:

Gordon, maybe this url can help him, it is just a group of people who are
suffering from AMD and living in Germany and know their way to the right
    people.
    www.macula-degeneration.de/deutsch.html
You can read it in English and you could choose die Deutsche sprache.

www.macula-net.de is another one founded by Novotaris allerdings nur auf
    Deutsch.

    Viel gluck damit,
