Any experience with lens removal - dislocated lenses?

Our 3 1/2 year old son has been diagnosed with Ectopia Lentis. His
lenses are dislocated. He has checked negative for all the common
causes such as Marfans. He has worn glasses for 6 months without much
improvement. He was just classified as legally blind. We have had 2
opinions from 2 well known Doctors in our area to have both lenses
removed. They said the lenses are in a bad postion and are starting to
cloud up and are doing more harm than good. They sent us to a retina
surgeon for a consultation and he agreed with the assesment. This was
tough to digest. I was hoping someone would have experience with this
and talk to me about this. We were in such shock to hear he was 20/200
since he seemed to be doing so well with the glasses! After the
surgery he is to wear contacts and glasses. He is not eligible for
    implants.
Does anyone have any advice as to what to expect?
