Can I dilute Lotemax to make Alrex?

Discussion in 'Optometry Archives' started by shawroom_124_youknow, Jul 22, 2007.

  1. Hi, my eye doctor changes my prescription to Alrex one week after she
wrote me a big bottle of Lotemax. Can I simply add over the counter
saline drops to Lotemax to make Alrex?

    Thanks

steroid preps like Lotemax/Alrex are actually suspensions. the
steroid is not completely dissolved in the buffer but instead is
suspended in the solution in small particles. creating a suspension
is a little tricky because if the buffer conditions are not correct
the steroid will precipitate out in the bottom of the bottle. i don't
think it would work out for you successfully if you tried diluting
with saline (or anything else unless you knew the exact pH, salt
    conc., etc.).

nice idea but I'd recommend against it.

  4. You probably could, but you'd have to use sterile technique and you
would dilute the preservatives and buffers so all bets are off on the
    outcome...
