exotropia vision therapy for toddler

Discussion in 'Eye-Care' started by amar amarnath, Jan 10, 2004.

  1. Hi,

Does anyone have information on vision therapy for a 2 1/2 year old
with intermittent exotropia ? We consulted three doctors and two of
them told us that surgery was the only option. We are about to go
with the third one for therapy. I have heard of success stories for
older kids (over 6 yrs). Any info on exotropia/strabismus related
vision therapy for toddlers is welcome. thanks.

    Dear Amar,

I am not a medical doctor -- but I see it this way.

We should leave the problem to the experts.

But, as you have found out, there is a majority
opiniion (cut the muscle) and the minority opinion,
    "Vision Therapy".

Kids over 6 years old can be taught to
control the intermittant exotropia. I when
through this process (I fought the process),
    but ultimately, through vision training
I learned to control the intermittant strabismus.
    Not an easy task.

How often does the child's eye "drift out".

    Best,

Have you ever read it ?

    I suppose you didn't.

Do you have imperfect eyesight ?

  5. Pinhole glasses are being prescribed in Italy by some medical doctors
to be worn 5 to 10 minutes a day for two months to correct exotropia
    and exoforia.

They act also as a bio-feedback machine to correct posture problems.

There is no need to cut any muscle but to train again the mind not to
    divert the eyes.

Things for intelligent people, of course.

People like Ann do not see the truth in these statements, and for this
reason they are marked by me as unintelligent.

To recover from unintelligence is not difficult.

    Just repent and start anew!!!

Please, for our edification and amusement, just how wearing pinhole glasses
for 5 minutes a day can correct exotropia. Come on now, be honest. What
    is the principle behind this?

  7. I do not know.
As far as I know, some research has been done in England.
I think you should get updated, maybe you can find some articles on the
Internet. You being a doctor have full access to medical publication. It
will be easy for you to find them.

It sounds like you agree with this practice, but do not understand why. In
fact, doesn't your dog wear pinhole glasses?

  12. I do not have any dog, now that the one I once had has died many months ago.

By the way, I do not agree with the practice, I just SELL pinhole
    glasses, and very fashionable too!!!

That must prove that the use of pinhole glasses can be fatal.

Anyway, I am sorry about the dog.

I am over 50 years old and have exotropia. Two surgeries in my youth did not correct the problem. You should be made aware that 75% of children with exotropia gon on to have behavior problems. May the SOURCE be with you:
