Restor IOL effective add

Discussion in 'Optometry Archives' started by William Stacy, Jun 8, 2006.

  1. I just saw my first Restor IOL which was implanted in a 33 year old
monocularly (due to cataract) about 5 months ago.

Interestingly, he sees pretty well at infinity and at about 12 inches.
Intermediate vision (15-24 inches) is terrible. Refraction is 0.00, so
the lens power was perfect, and the lens is well centered and clean.

On checking, it looks like the only effective add for this iol is 3.2 D.
at the spectacle plane. I suppose they figure mostly older folks will
like that strong add, and they might appreciate the 12" working distance...

Well, I now have to Rx a -1.00 to push the near focus out to a
comfortable (esp. for computer) distance, or I could pull the distance
focus inward by using a + 1.50, but that didn't "feel right" to him.

If they would produce a a few adds, esp. around +1.75 it would be a more
appropriate iol for people who use the computer a lot. He went for the
Restor because he didn't want to wear glasses. Now he must wear glasses
for computing, which is what he does.

BTW the other eye is normal, with a +.50 refraction.
