SE or Sph to assess myopia

    I work in a military processing station. We screen for high myopia on every myopic applicant. Our rules use a -8.00 SE for disqualification. Not understanding the optics in much depth here, why would not using the Sph alone be more accurate? My thinking is that the right combination of astigmatism might throw the SE below 8.00 and you couldn miss a significant myopic applicant.
